In reading groups this week we read a story about a group of rabbits that had many troubles including disobeying their mother, nearly drowning and losing their pumpkins down a stream. After drawing attention to the part that the makeshift boat sunk and the pumpkins "floated" down the stream... I asked the kids if they believed this would really happen. After recording our guesses we experimented with a pumpkin Jackson (so conventiently) brought in to our class.
We discovered that pumpkins do indeed float and that the author in the story had not been mistaken! We discussed how pumpkins are filled with air, like balls, which cause them to float.
